About Amy
Dr Amy Harwood PhD is a Reader in Clinical Exercise Physiology at Manchester Metropolitan University, working within the Institute of Sport and the Department for Sport and Exercise Sciences.
Amy is a registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist with the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) and has over a decade of experience working at the interface between research, health care and healthcare services. Her clinical work focuses on supporting people living with long term health conditions. In particular those living with peripheral artery disease, cardiac disease and other long-term cardiovascular conditions.
Beyond clinical work, Amy has an extensive research background spanning exercise physiology, clinical trials, and therapeutic interventions, including work on prehabilitation and rehabilitation strategies to improve functional capacity and quality of life in people with chronic disease. Her research also explores environmental and physiological stressors, such as heat therapy and cardiovascular responses to exercise.
Amy is actively involved in national and international research collaborations and serves in leadership roles within Clinical Exercise Physiology UK, including chairing its practitioner working group. She also contributes to major research governance activities, including membership of National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) trial steering committees.
Amy’s work is strongly focused on translating evidence into real-world impact, with a commitment to improving patient outcomes through clinically informed exercise prescription, rehabilitation pathways, and interdisciplinary collaboration across healthcare and academic sectors.
